Make a list and schedule
6- 8 Weeks
Remember to do the following:
- Get estimates from different moving companies.
- Choose a moving company.
- Confirm the details about the cost, packing, loading, delivery, and claims procedures.
- Arrange for your children's school records to be transferred.
- Make a floor plan of your new home to decide what to bring, what to discard, and where everything will be placed.
4 weeks
Please note the following important steps:
- Clean out your closets and get rid of any unwanted clothing. Consider holding a garage or tag sale, or donating to charities.
- Obtain boxes, tape, twine, labels, and other necessary supplies.
- If your mover is handling the packing, arrange to have it done one or two days before loading begins. If you're packing yourself, start with items that aren't used often and try to keep each box under 30 pounds. Pack books and other heavy items in small boxes.
- Send furniture, drapes, and carpets for repair or cleaning as needed.
- Review your homeowners insurance policy to confirm coverage for your possessions during the move. If in doubt, consult your insurance agent.
- Obtain change-of-address forms from the post office and send them out. Keep in mind that it can take up to a month for magazine publishers and other businesses to update their records.
3 weeks
- Make any motel or other reservations.
- Set a date to cancel utilities and to have them switched on at your new home.
- Ready car registration and insurance records for transfer.
2 weeks
Please remember to do the following:
- Arrange to transfer your bank accounts if necessary and notify any creditors that you’ll be moving.
- Make arrangements to move your pets and check with your local mover about moving houseplants as some movers won't take them.
- Cancel your newspaper delivery.
- Ask your doctor and dentist for your records if you'll be moving out of the area.
2 days
Remember the following:
- If you're not packing your goods yourself, arrange for a mover to do so.
- Remember to defrost and dry refrigerators and freezers before moving them.
- Get cash and payment arrangements for the trip and for paying the mover.
- Keep important items such as jewelry, vital documents, money, and other valuables with you during the move.
- Resolve parking issues with neighbors. Sort out lift access if you live in a apartment building.
- Label all boxes clearly with their contents and intended room in the new home for easy unpacking.
Moving day
- Be on hand to answer questions and give directions to movers.
- Save your muscles by letting the moving crew take apart beds, roll-up carpets, and put mattresses in bags or boxes.
- Plan the evening meal for move day. It may be easier to eat out or order in
- Disconnect wifi, PC and TV etc.
- Consider packing a separate “essentials” box with items you’ll need immediately upon arrival, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, and any important documents.
- Be prepared to pay the driver before your goods are unloaded if requested.
- Carefully look over everything, before you sign off on invoice.
- Discuss any claims with movers before invoice is settled. This is necessary to process any claims.
